Coimbatore: The Law and Order ADGP, Thamarai Kannan has stated that it is mandatory to constantly monitor social media pages during elections, at the consultative meeting held on Monday.

A consultative meeting ahead of the upcoming local body elections was held at the Coimbatore Police Commissioner's office. The Law and Order ADGP, Thamarai Kannan who presided the meeting stated that it is highly important that the social media platforms are monitored closely during elections.

The mandatory procedures to be adhered to in case of conflict and religious issues between politicians, suggestions to the authorities regarding the vote counting and procedures to be followed during the victory processions were all discussed in the meeting.

He said, 'The police should monitor social media with utmost care during election season. This will help in identifying and solving problems early. Special officers should be appointed in each district and city police for this purpose.'

Inspector Sivakumar of the Intelligence Bureau has been appointed as the monitoring officer for social media in Coimbatore city. Police commissioners, DIG's, SPs and additional SPs from the West Zone were present at the meeting.
