Over 125 bird species spotted during synchronised bird count phase 2 conducted in Coimbatore District.

A total of 26 wetlands in Coimbatore division and 11 wetlands in Pollachi division were covered during the synchronised bird count phase 2 conducted in Coimbatore District wetlands on, Sunday,13 February 2022.


கோவை: A total of 26 wetlands in Coimbatore division and 11 wetlands in Pollachi division were covered during the synchronised bird count phase 2 conducted in Coimbatore District wetlands on, Sunday,13 February 2022. 



Around 57 volunteers from Coimbatore Nature Society and WWF-India and 30 forest staff took part the survey. 15 teams in Coimbatore and 9 teams in Pollachi carried out the survey during which over 125 bird species were recorded during the survey.



Duck species such as Bar headed goose, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Lesser Whistling Duck, Pigmy Cotton Goose, Common Teal and Spot Billed Duck were recorded. And, two species of Plovers (Pacific Golden Plover and Little Ringed Plover) and four species of Sandpipers (marsh, wood, green and common sandpipers) were recorded. 



Key sightings from the survey including Bar headed goose, Pacific golden plover, Common greenshank, Northern pintail, Northern shoveler and Osprey. Large number of barn swallows, red rumped swallows, whiskered terns and baya weavers were observed by team in different wetlands in the district.
