Poultry waste from shops is collected, recycled, and then converted into edible fodder for pets in the city.
Coimbatore: Poultry waste collected from shops is being recycled into food for pets by the Coimbatore City Corporation.
In order to avoid health hazards and pollution associated with meat waste, the Corporation has joined hands with a start-up, collecting poultry waste from shops, all seven days of the week, to recycle and convert them into edible fodder for pets in the city.
According to a Corporation source, “The water bodies, including ponds in the areas within the Coimbatore Corporation limits are increasingly polluted due to dumping of poultry waste. Since dumping such waste in the open poses health hazards, the Corporation is making various efforts to prevent this. As a measure, two vehicles have been deployed to collect poultry waste from shops in all five zones of the Corporation.”
The collected waste is transported to the Vellalore garbage dump where it is properly converted into fodder for domestic animals through a specially-developed recycling center. This work is being carried out through a particular start-up company. While 5 to 6 tonnes of poultry waste are collected by these vehicles on weekdays, 10 to 12 tonnes are collected and recycled on weekends.
Up to 7 tonnes of feed per day is prepared and supplied to the necessary institutions through this process. The Corporation plans to increase product range to 10 tonnes in the days ahead.
