Members of the Dravida Tamilar Katchi, Adi Tamilar Peravai, VCK and a few other political parties submitted the petition to the District Collector.

Coimbatore: The representatives of all political parties demanded 19 percent reservation for the Scheduled Tribes in the urban local polls in Coimbatore.

The members of the Dravida Tamilar Katchi, Adi Tamilar Peravai, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and a few others submitted a petition to the District Collector seeking a 19 percent reservation for the Scheduled Tribes in the urban local elections, in Coimbatore Corporation.

Among the 100 wards in Coimbatore, only 10 have been allotted for the SC/STs. The representatives from all parties including Adi Tamilar Peravai, Dravida Tamilar Katchi and Samooga Needhi Katchi submitted a petition to the District Collector G S Sameeran, seeking a 19 percent reservation for the community.

The petitioners stated that the allotment for the community has irregularities, terming it as an abduction of their political and livelihood rights. They added that this has been creating a gap between the people and the welfare assistance, their rights and benefits.

In order to change this situation, 19 percent reservation was demanded in the local body elections. The Election Commission has been requested to take immediate action with regard to the issue.
