Power loom wage revision; Covai MP PR Natarajan calls for State Government’s intervention

Calling attention to the power loom wage revision issue between the power loom owners and the cloth producers in Coimbatore and Tirupur, MP PR Natarajan stated that the TN government has to intervene on agreement breach.


Coimbatore: An attention seeking protest was held on behalf of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) demanding that the government of Tamil Nadu has to intervene in the power loom wage issue and provide a solution.

Urging the Government of Tamil Nadu to take note of the challenges faced by power loom owners with regard to wages, the district committees of in the (CPI(M)) of Coimbatore and Tirupur staged an attention seeking protest in Somanur on Tuesday.



CITU Tamil Nadu Powerloom Workers Union Federation President Muthusamy led the demonstration held at the Somanur power board office.

Member of Parliament, PR Natarajan talking to the reporters urged the state government to ensure that the textile producers provides agreed wages, and stated that breaching the agreement consented in the presence of Coimbatore, Tirupur Collectors and the state’s Ministers is completely unacceptable.

“The state government should intervene in the matter immediately considering the livelihood of powerloom owners and wage labourers weaving for wages and step in as the agreement accepted in the presence of state ministers and district collectors is violated.”

The MP said that the Ministers should provide a solution keeping in mind the agreement signed in their presence is being violated, adding that the Tirupur District Collector said the agreement did not have a legal right and would inform the state government to establish legal rights.

He condemned the union and powerloom workers union leaders being forced by the police for a random reason and sought a solution from the state government in a week, taking into account the law and order issue. The MP said a textile park should be set up in Somanur area as per the promise already made by the state government.

A large number of people from Coimbatore and Tirupur district participated in the protest.
