Medicines to treat covid-19 sold over-the-counter without prescription; Five pharmacies receive notice in Coimbatore

The city Drug Control Authorities issued notices to five pharmacies in the city for selling medicines to treat covid-19 without a doctor’s prescription under the Drug and Cosmetic Act.


Coimbatore: The city Drug Control Authorities issued a notice to five pharmacies in the city for selling medicines to treat Covid-19 without a doctor’s prescription. The notice was issued under the Drug and Cosmetic Act.

The District Drug Control Officers have issued notices to 5 private dispensaries in Coimbatore for the supply of medicines given for corona symptoms without prescription.

Private dispensaries have been advised not to sell medicines and tablets without doctors’ prescription for Covid symptoms including fever and cold. The District Drugs Control Authorities are conducting inspections at private dispensaries in the city and in the process has identified 5 dispensaries that supplied such drugs.

The authorities issued notices under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act for selling medicines in violation of norms.

S Gurubharathi, Assistant Director of Drug Control, stated that “In the wake of the increasing incidence of Covid, the sale of medicines without medical prescription has been banned in private dispensaries.”

“However, it has been revealed that some dispensaries do supply the medications without a doctor's prescription. They have been issued notices stating not to supply drugs without doctors’ prescriptions. Legal action will be taken against the dispensaries in case of violation once again.”
