Coimbatore City Police arrested tthe offenders under the Goondas Act.
Coimbatore: Coimbatore City Police have seized 1 crore worth of ganja and all three vehicles used for smuggling contraband from Andhra Pradesh to Coimbatore and Theni, and arrested the offenders under the Goondas Act.
“Three cars used for smuggling 1 crore worth Ganja from Andhra Pradesh to Coimbatore and Theni have been seized, Seven persons were arrested,” stated Namakkal Superintendent of Police, Sarokumar Tagore while briefing the media. He added that 400 kg of ganja was seized in 2021 and reiterated that such searches will be further conducted.
The police team led by Inspector Ravi were conducting vehicle searches at 3:30 am on Thursday at Salem-Coimbatore bypass, near Kumarapalayam, at Katteri Junction. Two cars were stopped and searched. The car passengers were identified as Kishore Kumar (30) of Kuniyamuthur, Abdul Jalil (30) of Ukkadam, Mujeeb Rahman (29) and Sultan (29). All four men confessed to attempting to sneak cannabis from Andhra Pradesh to Coimbatore.
In a similar action, the police led by Namakkal Sub Inspector Murugan were conducting a vehicle search near Mudalaipatti, Salem-Karur bypass at 2:30 am on Thursday. The police stopped a car whose passengers were identified as Murugan (49), Jayachandran (67) and Mukesh (29) of Theni district. The men confessed to smuggling ganja from Andhra Pradesh to Theni district.
The cops seized 200 kg of ganja from them and the car was seized.
300 kg of ganja worth 1 crore and three cars were thus seized from both raids. Seven men have been arrested under the Goondas Act.
