Live online, 500 bulls, 300 contestants; District Collector inspects Jallikattu ground in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: The District Collector Sameeran inspected the ground set up to host Jallikattu in Coimbatore and stated that the contest, on 21st, will be telecasted live for the audience.



The Coimbatore District Collector Dr GS Sameeran personally inspected the preparations and security measures at the ground set up for the Jallikattu competition to be held at Chettipalayam on 21st of January.



Later, addressing journalists, the Collector stated that the government has issued orders with guidelines to conduct Jallikattu competitions safely in view of the high incidence of the coronavirus. As per the orders, the Jallikattu contest will be held in Coimbatore on 21st.

Keeping in mind the guidelines issued by the government, 500 bulls and 300 cow herds will participate in the contest, that will be held from 8 am to 5 pm. Steps to telecast the contest live has been made as spectators are not allowed to participate.

He added, “Guidelines for Jallikattu competition alone have been issued by the Government, while no announcement has been mentioned in the G.O. for other traditional sports like cock fight and rekla. All arrangements have been made including necessary medicine for bulls and oxen. Participants in the competitions must produce a negative RTPCR test report and certificate of two doses of vaccine.”

The owner and an assistant are permitted to be with the participating animals. Permission will be granted only to the owners and the contestants who have already registered. The City Superintendent of Police Selvanagarathinam will be deploying 2,000 police personnel for security and control in case there are civilians at the stadium on the day of the event.
