Vigil stepped up in city; Vehicle checkpoints at 45 places in Coimbatore for New Year surveillance; Coimbatore City Police Commissioner

City Commissioner of Police Pradip Kumar informed reporters at the office of the Coimbatore City Police that all police personnel are on duty in Coimbatore tonight and 1,050 police personnel have been deployed on security duty.

Police said checkpoints have been set up at 45 places in the city and arrests will be made for driving under influence and those involved in a dispute will be arrested.



Pradip Kumar said CCTV cameras, installed at 7 of the 11 checkpoints would be monitored from the surveillance office. 44 two-wheelers and 23 mobile patrol vehicles would be deployed on security duty. He stated that additional police were deployed on security duty at places of worship in temples and churches.

Speaking further, Pradip Kumar said, that in the future, if caste-religious conflicts are registered on social media, those responsible for the content, will be prosecuted and arrested. He said that 70 people, including the three currently arrested under POCSO, have been arrested under the Goondas Act.

Pradip Kumar, who said that in Coimbatore city surveillance at night is intensified, added the department has introduced surveillance through face regeneration software and action is taken against complaints received through social media platforms. This year 1,872 CCTV cameras have been fitted to monitor and detect crimes.

He shared that the deputy commissioner had been focusing on selecting key cases over the past ten years besides, monitoring those who had been arrested under the Goondas Act in previous years. Those who are released from jail this year are watched.

Fifty grams of ganja was seized, those who are involved are being identified and arrested. A list of drug dealers is made. He noted that more attention is paid to child protection, women safety, drugs and road safety.
