Palladam students win medals at the 59th National Skating Championships in Delhi

The coaches said that so far only two training centers have been set up at the Chennai Nehru Stadium and the Coimbatore VOC Park to train for international level competitions in Tamil Nadu and that the poor students would also be helped if the Tamil Nadu government took steps to set up roller skating training grounds district-wise.

Tirupur: It is exciting to think about flying with the wheels on the feet and it is something we do not experience in any other work or sport.

Skating is the only sport that gives us this feeling. Three students from Palladam, Tirupur district, won two silver and two bronze medals at the 59th National Roller Skating Championships in Delhi that was hosted from December 11 to 20.

Anjala Parvin Nisar, an 8th class girl from Shijina and Nisar from Palladam, have been training to skate for 5 years and have so far won several medals at three state level competitions and three national level competitions. Nisar has also won two silver and one bronze medal in the competition in Delhi.

Murugan and Rajkala's son Sripranav from Palladam won bronze in the 9- to 11-year-old sub-junior category. So far he has won medals at three state level competitions and two national level competitions. Trained at the Velocity International Roller Skating Complex Training Center near Palladam, the students said they wanted to compete at international level and become world champions.

The coaches said that so far only two training centers have been set up at the Chennai Nehru Stadium and the Coimbatore VOC Park to train aspirants for international level competitions in Tamil Nadu and that the students from socio-economically weaker sections, would also be helped if the Tamil Nadu government took steps to set up roller skating training grounds district-wise.

The demand of all the students is that the government of Tamil Nadu should break the myth that the sport is only for children of rich families and make way for the children from downtrodden communities gain exposure to this sport.
