Bird flu: District Collectors orders suspicious death of chickens should be reported

There are a total of 1,203 poultry and backyard poultry farms in Coimbatore district. The District Collector said any sudden death or symptoms of bird flu in chickens on poultry farms should be reported immediately.


Coimbatore: Coimbatore District Collector GS Sameeran has directed that in case of sudden death of chickens housed in poultry farms and meat shops in Coimbatore district due to rising bird flu in the neighbouring state of Kerala, the veterinary hospital should be informed immediately.



District Collector Sameeran visited the Walayar check post on the Kerala border today and inspected the bird flu prevention activities.



He then told reporters, "As a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of infections such as Omicron and bird influenza in the border areas of the state of Kerala including Anaikatti, Walayar, Velanthavalam, Melpaavi, Mulli, Meenatchipuram, Gopalapuram, Semanampathy, Veerappagavundanpudur, Nadupaduthurai, intensive surveillance work is being carried out by the Police and Local Government Departments. The teams are set up to work in rotation 24 hours a day. An officer has been appointed as the Deputy Collector to oversee these committees. In addition, a check post has been set up by the Animal Husbandry Department to monitor vehicles transporting livestock and animal feed.

A coordinating committee will be set up to carry out bird flu diagnosis and precautionary measures. Follow-up inspections will be carried out.
