The doctors at the government hospital here in the city successfully performed the first-ever Frey’s operation, saving a 12-year-old’s life.
Coimbatore: The doctors in Mettupalayam Government Hospital have successfully performed the first pancreatic surgery, the Frey’s operation on a 12-year-old child.
In a four-hour-long procedure, a team of 15 doctors performed surgery, to core out the diseased portions of the pancreas head and the stones formed and were removed through a bypass surgery through the intestines from a 12-year-old child.The child is now recovering and will be in observation for another week stated the doctor, Vijayagiri.
The 12-year old, daughter of daily wage workers, Ananda Kumar, 35, and Gunalakshmi, 28 is from Annur near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district. The girl has been suffering from various ailments including chronic abdominal pain, indigestion, vomiting, and jaundice infections for the past six months and is said to have not recovered after being treated in various hospitals.
Parents took the child finally to Mettupalayam government hospital for treatment where several tests were conducted under the leadership of Dr.Kannan, the head doctor of the government hospital. The examination revealed that the pancreas was split into two due to congenital disorder and the entire head portion was damaged, causing the juices secreted in the region turn into stones.
This led to the formation of a 15-member team headed by Chief Physician Kannan, Dr. Vijayagiri, and others who performed a 4 hour-long surgery to remove the stones and the affected head and stones from the pancreas.
It is stated that such complex surgeries are performed in large-scale hospitals and medical college hospitals in Tamil Nadu with various facilities, but such a surgery performed successfully at the Taluk level Mettupalayam Government Hospital and doctors have come out a bigger sensation.
