Husband’s approval not necessary for women to claim ration cards; TN Government makes a sweeping announcement

After various requests that were made to alter the system that included producing divorce documents while getting new ration cards, the Tamil Nadu government has made a stunning announcement.


Coimbatore:The Tamil Nadu Government has announced that women, who are abandoned by their husbands, those who are divorced need not obtain husbands’ consent for getting a new ration card.

The Government of Tamil Nadu has made a sweeping announcement stating that women abandoned by their husbands in Tamil Nadu necessarily need not submit pertaining documents to prove that they are no longer in a relationship with the man.

Earlier it was necessary to submit documents such as divorce when applying for a new ration card. Many people requested that the procedure be changed. The Government of Tamil Nadu has announced that women who have been separated from husband, abandoned by their husbands or divorced need not obtain the consent of their male counterpart while applying for a new ration card.

The Department of Food Supplies and Consumer Protection has directed subordinate officers not to ask for any documents from such women who have applied for a new card. Women have expressed their happiness as this announcement is made.
