Southwest monsoon is over, northeast monsoon begins on the 26th; Meteorological Center Information

Chennai Meteorological Department has forecast showers today and tomorrow in 22 districts including Vellore, Ranipettai, Thiruvannamalai, Tirupattur, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Trichy will receive heavy to very heavy rains today.

Coimbatore: The southwest monsoon has receded and the north-east monsoon is expected to begin on the 26th, said Balachandran, head of the southern zone at the Chennai Meteorological Center.

The southwest monsoon started on June 3 this year and has spread across the country. Southwest monsoon intensifies in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka and north-eastern states. Heavy rains over the past two weeks have caused dams in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and the north-eastern districts, causing floods in many places. The southwest monsoon is expected to recede in the next 25 days.

In a statement, Balachandran, Southern Regional Chairman, Indian Meteorological Center, said that from the 26th onwards, the north-east monsoon will be favourable in the Bay of Bengal and South India. Thus, the south-west monsoon is likely to move away from Indian parts and the north-east monsoon is likely to start on the 26th. As of yesterday morning, the maximum rainfall in the state was 6 cm in Sholavandan, Sathankulam and Pennagaram areas. He said no warning has been given to fishermen.

Chennai Meteorological Department has forecast showers today and tomorrow in 22 districts including Vellore, Ranipettai, Thiruvannamalai, Tirupattur, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Trichy will receive heavy to very heavy rains today. Districts along the Western Ghats, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tirupati, Namakkal and Erode districts will receive heavy rains tomorrow. There will be light rain in Chennai.
