State Minister for Law S. Regupathy inspects Central Prison in Coimbatore on Monday

The Minister for Law S. Regupathy in the press meet stated that the prisoners serving punishment for more than 10 years are being considered to be released.


Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Minister for Law S. Regupathy inspected the Central Prison in Coimbatore on Monday.



Talking to the reporters, he stated that the convicts are provided sufficient training while they are serving their term in prison.



He added that the training will help them make a living after they are released from jail. He said the government is considering release of prisoners who have served over 10 years and added that the eligible convicts shall be granted release. The Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, has been taking all efforts to release seven accused in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.

He added that also on the cards is to release the convicts who are sentenced to 14 years of life imprisonment on basis of their good behaviour. After the convicts serve a term period of 10 years the decision to release them will be taken in consultation with the government and officials. Their release will be subject to certain terms and conditions, the minister told media persons.

To a question on the relocation of the central prison in the city, the state minister said, “Former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi allotted the place for Construction of ’Semmozhi Park. The transfer request is brought to the notice of the government and the Chief Minister's decision would be final.”



The State Minister for Law said that it was the Chief Minister's intention to renovate and modernize all Tamil Nadu prisons. The government's intention is to set up open prisons. If the Central Prison is relocated, the Semmozhi Park will be set up at this place He also said, “It will become a tough job to identify a place for setting up new prison if the park is constructed.” He said steps will be taken to set up open prisons in all the central jails in the state.

Stating that prisoners are being allowed to appear for class VIII, X, and XII examinations and required coaching is provided, the Minister for Law told reporters that arrangements are also being made to ensure that the convicts who are lodged in our jails get access to training for college courses in various disciplines.

He stated that the Chief Minister is working as a common leader and added the Prison Bazaar’s production has also spiked as normalcy is returning post the covid pandemic.

When quizzed about the former state health minister’s homes and properties being raided, the serving state Minister for Law said that it is the decision of the government in power and he shall not comment on it.

Replying to a question on the delay in arrest of H Raja, Minister Regupathy, stated that the government shall soon arrest the BJP functionary. A defamation case has been filed in Srivilliputhur Court against BJPs National Executive Member, H. Raja.
