Coimbatore: Cargo handled at Coimbatore International Airport during September has touched 798 tonnes, with large quantities of gold bars and industrial machinery booked in the domestic sector.
Like several other sectors, the aviation industry faced major crisis in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Travel and cargorestrictions, grounded fleets and more, the aviation industry that was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic is only now beginning to recover.
Compared to last few months, the air cargo movement is picking up pace at Coimbatore International airport. Along with other supplies, industrial machineries, equipments and gold bars have attributed to the notablerise of cargo in the domestic sector, say airport sources.
The sources add that prior to the pandemic, close to 1000 tonnes of cargo were handled (800 tonnes domestic and 200 tonnes international) at the Coimbatore international airport. However, after the pandemic both flight operations and cargo, took a massive hit.
Sources at Airport state that “With the pandemic slowing down, flight operations and cargo have picked up pace, here. A total of 798 tonnes of cargo was handled in the month of September (690 domestic cargo and 108 tonnes of international cargo) compared to 108 tonnes of international cargo and 566 tonnes of domestic cargo that were handled in the month of August.
