Man dies at relative's funeral after being stung by honey bees in Kinathukadavu

The deceased was attending the last rites at the funeral of a relative and was stung by honey bees at the burial ground along with a few others.


Coimbatore: In a bizarre tragedy, a man was killed in a honey-bee attack in Kinathukadavu while attending the funeral of a relative.

Velusami of Kothavadi village in Kinathukadavu had passed away on Saturday due to ill-health. His body was taken to the burial ground situated on the banks of the Kothavadi river. A beehive on a banyan tree in the burial place was accidentally disrupted by the relatives of Velusami who were performing the last rites.

Over 20 relatives got stung by the bees and had to be admitted to the Pollachi Government Hospital. Most of the victims were treated for their injuries and returned home.



However, one of the victims, Saminathan reportedly fell ill again died on Monday. No action had been taken thus far by the Fire Department in spite of repeated requests by the Kothavadi Panchayat Union. Villagers are now demanding for the beehive to be removed to ensure the safety of locals in the village to avoid further casualties.
