Boys to be handed over to their biological parents
Coimbatore: Four boys who are under 14-years of age were rescued in an operation initiated by the Coimbatore division of the National Child Labour Program.
While two of the boys were rescued from mills operating in Pollachi and Annur, the other two boys were rescued from petrol stations located in Arasur and Sulur. The team also rescued six teenage boys who were doing odd jobs at two and four-wheeler workshops, petrol stations and bakeries.
The children and teenage boys were rescued from the clutches of their employers in an operation that was carried out by the Coimbatore District Child Welfare Committee in association with other committees. T V Vijayakumar, Project Director of National Child Labour Program, Coimbatore chapter informed that the rescue team has already made arrangements to reunite the children and teenage boys with their biological parents.
Five of the rescued children and teenagers were put through a radiological examination at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital to determine their age since they did not have documents to prove their age.
The district administration is cracking the whip on commercial establishments who employ children. Those found guilty will be prosecuted in the Coimbatore Criminal Court by the Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health and a formal complaint will be lodged with the police station concerned. Furthermore, legal action will be taken against the guilty under Sections 79 of the 1986 Penalty Act 1986.
Coimbatore District Collector, G S Sameeran has warned that strict action will be initiated against commercial establishments who employee children and teenagers to work in their establishment. An inspection was carried out by the Labour Department, Occupational Safety and Health Directorate, revenue department, police department, district child protection unit, skyline 1098 organization, district enforcement committee and National Child Labour Program Coimbatore. in the recent inspection 195 shops, bakeries, hotels, commercial establishments, two wheeler and four wheeler repair workshops, factories and mills operating in Kinathukadavu, Annur, Pollachi, Sulur and Anaimalai were inspected.
