Crime against women is the lowest in Coimbatore and Chennai - NCRB

Study brings to light that in the last three years, crimes against women in cities were Coimbatore (9.0), Chennai (13.4), Bengaluru (67.3), Mumbai (53.8), Kochi (37.5) while the crime rate was highest in Lucknow (190.7)


Coimbatore: Data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for 2020, brings to light that crime rate against women is the lowest in Coimbatore and Chennai compared to 19 other metro cities in India.

Study brings to light that in the last three years, crimes against women in cities were Coimbatore (9.0), Chennai (13.4), Bengaluru (67.3), Mumbai (53.8), Kochi (37.5) while the crime rate was highest in Lucknow (190.7), Jaipur (162.9), Delhi (129.1). The state capital saw a decline in crimes against women between 2018 and 2020 at 761, 729 and 576. Contradictory, in Coimbatore, crime against women in 2018 was 107 and dipped to 85 in 2019 and spiked to 97 in 2020.

Taking into account, absolute numbers, metro cities in the state of Kerala had fewer crimes in comparison with its Chennai counterpart. While Kochi and Kozhikode saw 403 and 294, in terms of absolute numbers, last year, Chennai had 576. Coimbatore, in terms of absolute numbers too is the lowest in the country with 97 crimes last year. According to experts, low crime rates against women can be attributed to related to factors including lack of reporting and no proper mechanism in place.

Assam recorded the highest crime rates against women in the country for the fourth consecutive year, according to data provided by the NCRB for 2020. The report brings to light that the crime rate against women in Assam is 154.3. Crime rate against women in Odisha and in Delhi is 112.9 and 106.4. The national crime rate against women in the country is 56.5. The rate is calculated as the number of crimes recorded per 100,000 population.
