Siruvani Dam water level rises to 40.6 feet

Due to the steady flow of the southwest monsoon in the Western Ghats, the inflow of water to Siruvani Dam water level rises to 40.6 feet

Coimbatore: The water level of Coimbatore Siruvani Dam has risen to 40.6 feet. As a result, there will be no shortage of drinking water in Coimbatore for the next six months, a Drinking Water Drainage Board official said. Siruvani Dam is the source of drinking water for 36 wards and roadside areas under the Corporation of Coimbatore. Although the catchment areas of the dam are in Tamil Nadu, the dam is located in Palakkad, Kerala. The dam is 50 feet high but Kerala authorities only allow stagnant drinking water up to a height of 45 feet for the safety of the dam.

Due to the steady flow of the southwest monsoon in the Western Ghats, the inflow of water to the adjacent water bodies has increased. In the Coimbatore Noyyal river, the river water is coming beyond the Chittiraichavadi dam. Meanwhile, the water level of the Siruvani Dam had been below 35 feet for the past few weeks. Currently, the water level of the dam is rising sharply due to the influx of water into the dam. As of yesterday, the water level of the dam is 40.6 feet. Currently, 101 MLT of drinking water is extracted daily from the dam.Drinking Water Drainage Board officials said 97.8 MLT was being discharged for the drinking water needs of Coimbatore Corporation.
