Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association Coimbatore District Committee protest against shifting city's Seed Certification Office to Chennai

The Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association Coimbatore District Committee protested in front of the District Collectorate holding seeds and plant saplings in their hands.

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association Coimbatore District Committee protested in front of the District Collectorate on Monday with seeds and plant saplings in their hands to stop the Seed Certification Office from being shifted from Coimbatore to Chennai.

They petitioned the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and the District Collector, and the Ministry of Agriculture in Coimbatore to reconsider the decision taken by the Government of Tamil Nadu to shift the Seed Certification and Organic Certification Department which has been functioning in Coimbatore for the last 50 years to Chennai.

In the last 10 years, the record of certified seed farms was 55,000 hectares and the production of certified seed was about 1.10 lakh tonnes. About 70 percent of the seed farms are located in districts like Coimbatore, Tirupur and Madurai. With a focus on the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, a large number of farmers have availed the facility without any difficulty. Seeds are provided to the farmers without any delay as most of the seed traders in the state are from the Coimbatore region.
