Vinayagar Chaturthi Festival: 1500 police mobilized in Coimbatore district and public warned that statues will be disposed if placed in violation

Vinayagar statues should not be placed in public places and the government has given permission to place Vinayagar statues only in houses and temples and to dissolve them in water bodies.

Coimbatore: Vinayagar Chaturthi festival is to be celebrated all over India including Tamil Nadu. In this case, due to the fear of the spread of coronavirus infection the central government has ordered the respective states to announce relaxations, taking into account the coronavirus situation. 

Based on this, the Tamil Nadu government issued an order banning the Vinayagar Chaturthi festival procession. Hindu organizations had announced that Vinayagar statues and processions would be held in public places in defiance of the ban. 

As a precautionary measure, 1,500 policemen in Coimbatore district have been deployed on security duty from tonightas Vinayagar Chaturthi is to be celebrated tomorrow. Fifteen police teams have been set up to remove idols placed in public places in violation of the ban. More than 45 trucks are ready to dispose of the statues. Each team will be headed by sub-inspectors with two policemen, two corporation employees and a revenue official, police said. The disposed Vinayagar idols will be handed over to the Department of Hindu Religious Affairs.
