Irate passengers urge intervention from Ministry of Civil Aviation to curb fare hike during festivals and weekends

Passengers are expected to pay Rs.10,000 to fly from Coimbatore to Chennai on festivals and weekends and Rs.15,000 to Mumbai.

Coimbatore: Ticket prices for flights from Coimbatore International Airport to cities including Chennai and Mumbai have shot up ahead of the weekend and festive seasons.

Shocked passengers opined, "The average fare from Coimbatore to Chennai is Rs. 3,300 and to Mumbai it is Rs. 5,000. Ticket prices for flights between Coimbatore-Chennai and Coimbatore-Mumbai have been hiked as of Thursday, ahead of Ganesha Chaturthi and the weekend.

The fare from Coimbatore to Chennai is Rs. 9,889 and from Chennai to Coimbatore is Rs. 9,557.

The fare between Mumbai and Coimbatore is Rs.14,238.

This is way too high. The Ministry of Civil Aviation should take action to ensure that airlines charge reasonable rates on weekends and holidays."

Coimbatore airport operated only five flights per day, last May. The number of flights is gradually increasing every month and currently 16 to 17 flights are operated daily. While pleased with the increased movement of flights, the fares fixed by the airlines on festive and weekends have distressed regular passengers and those who fly during holidays and weekends.
