State Government urged to intervene regarding increase of rent for municipality shops in Valparai

An emergency consultation meeting was held by the Valparai Regional Traders Association to resolve issue of increase in rent of municipality shops in Valparai

Coimbatore: There are more than 300 shops of the municipality in the Puthu market area in Valparai, Coimbatore district. The rent for these shops is being increased every 3 years but the rent has not been collected for the last two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak. Currently, the municipality administration has fixed a new rent slab and issued a notice to the traders to pay immediately. This has come as a shock to traders who have already been hard-hit by various restrictions due to the Coronavirus pandemic lockdowns which also caused a loss in livelihood for some.

An emergency consultation meeting was held by the Valparai Regional Traders Association under the chairmanship of Jebaraj to discuss the situation. Multiple increase in rent of municipality shops, business tax and excessive increase in deposits were discussed at the meeting. In the resolution passed at the meeting, it was unanimously requested that the State Government intervenes directly in the matter.

The meeting was attended by Valparai Circle via Traders Association President A Jebaraj, General Secretary M G Shaji George Malikal, Treasurer G Jesudasan and over a hundred merchants.
