TNAU advises farmers on amplifying chickpea cultivation


Coimbatore:Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and National Food Safety Commission together conduct awareness programs for farmers in the state on various cultivation ideas and techniques for pulses and cereals, The team provided support and knowledge for those cultivating chickpeas as one part of the program. As per their guidelines, Chickpea seeds should be sowed during the winter season, the month of Purattasi, (middle of September) Seeds shall be sown with 10 meters gap at least with 70-75 seeds per pit and the land should be ploughed 4 times.

The seeds should be treated with Phospho bacteria along with rice porridge.

Applying micronutrient mixture supplied by the Government of Tamil Nadu to the crop at the rate of 5 kg per hectare increases the yield of the crop. Harvest can be done after 85 to 90 days of sowing.

National Food Safety Commission Project Director Chitradevi said that this cultivation will result in a yield of 1000 to 1150 kg and a higher profit at a lower investment.
