Siruvani Dam nurtures 26 wards and over 20 villages in and around the city.
Coimbatore:The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board has reported that the water level in the Siruvani Dam had risen to 874 meters, which meant that there would be no water shortage in the city for at least a year.
Drinking water is supplied from Siruvani Dam to 26 wards in Coimbatore Corporation and also to more than 20 villages adjoining the city.
The water level in the dam gradually decreased due to extreme summer conditions last April and May. Seven litres of water were drawn from the dam as the water level was only 868 meters. However, water levels rose during the southwest monsoon and intermittent rainfall maintained the water level in sufficient levels.
During the week, 18 mm rainfall was recorded in Siruvani on Tuesday and 14 mm on Wednesday. Following this, as of Thursday, the water level in Siruvani Dam increased to 874.16 meters (35.29 feet).
'During the same period last year, the Siruvani Dam reached full capacity twice. However, the Kerala Irrigation Department released water into the river without filling the dam. Though the dam has not reached full capacity this year, there is enough drinking water available to supply Coimbatore areas for a year until the southwest monsoon begins next year. There is no possibility of shortage of drinking water' reassured an official.
