St.Paul’s College Chairman arrested in Coimbatore for spreading misinformation and hate

A letter from St.Paul’s was found inviting people for procession against Vinayagar Chaturthi

Coimbatore:David, Chairman of St.Paul’s School and Arts and Science College, Kanuvai, was arrested yesterday for ridiculing religious beliefs of a particular group.

A letter pad under St.Paul’s institution’s name was found having contents that spread misinformation on Vinayagar Chaturthi celebrations.

The district Collector Sameeran had ordered that there will be no celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi, no processions will take place owing to the pandemic. While there were condemnations all over the city for the order, a letter pad of St.Paul’s was found that said, “Continuous prayers and pilgrimage done from 2017 has led the collector to issue a ban on celebrations. Thus, missionaries, friends, brothers and sisters, I invite you to join me in a holy procession on Ganesh Chaturthi, 10/09/2021, which will also help us fight pandemic”

Outraged by the message, the Hindu Munnani party lodged a complaint at Thudiyalur Police Station and demanded immediate arrest of David, the Chairman of St.Paul’s for spreading hate talks.

David was arrested and case filed under 3 sections;Inciting hostility towards caste, religion, language, and race (IPC 153(a)(1), Intentional insult (504), Causing Conflict between two religions 505(2).

The Judicial Magistrate court ruled 15 days in remand for David.
