Citizens Voice Coimbatore petitions TN Chief Minister to initiate and deploy expert committee to handle city's waste management

Petition stated that Vellalore dumpyard and sewage treatment plant at Nanjundapuram and Ukkadam posed risk of serious health hazards

Coimbatore: The Citizen’s Voice Coimbatore petitioned the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M K Stalin to deploy an expert committee that would take care of the waste management in Coimbatore which has been a concern for the city for over 20 years now.

There have been various petitions, demonstrations and protests regarding the issue of waste dumping and waste management in the Vellalore Dumpyard and STP at Nanjundapuram and Ukkadam. The petition states that the foul-smelling air around the dumpyard could cause health hazards for those living in the area, since they end up breathing contaminated air.

The petition also stated that 'Vetiver' and 'Nannari' have been planted around the boundaries of the dumpyard to reduce the foul smell. The petitioners thus requested for a committee to be set up that will initiate proper segregation of collection of waste and management of waste, and setting of Sewage Treatment Plants for treating wastewater. “A committee comprising of highly qualified experienced and local citizens who have the knowledge of such treatment plants ought to be constituted to ensure correct installation and operation of the plant,” demanded the petitioners.
