A case has been registered and being investigated by the police along with the Cybercrime branch.

Coimbatore:Though cybercrimes are not new, and in spite of numerous warnings, people are constantly falling prey to scammers and hackers regularly.

A businessman in Coimbatore was defrauded of Rs.40,000 through Google Pay by a man posing as an army personnel.

Sadhik (31), an online businessman from Coimbatore was contacted by a stranger called Sandeep who said he was an army personnel and was looking for a quality wet grinder to use in canteens. Sandeep requested Sadhik to share details of the wet grinder as well as his bank details for transfer of money for the wet grinder. Sandeep promised to pay later since army personnel reportedly had a number of restrictions in payment modes. Sadhik completely believed Sandeep who reportedly tested the transaction process through Google Pay by an initial transfer of Rs. 5 and Rs. 10.

When an amount of Rs. 2000 was debited from Sadhik’s account suddenly, Sandeep allegedly apologised for the mistake and said he would pay the entire amount along with the money for the grinder. He asked Sadhik for details of a different bank account and the scam repeated, resulting in a whopping Rs. 40000 being withdrawn from Sadhik’s account.

After Sadhik complained to the police, a case has been registered and is being investigated with the help of the Cybercrime branch.
