Aliyar Dam near Pollachi reaches full capacity due to heavy rain: Excess water discharged

Surplus water discharged through 4 sluices for safety reasons.

Coimbatore: In the Western Ghats near Pollachi, heavy rains over the last few days have increased the flow of water in the Parambikulam Aliyar Irrigation Project.

Thus, the Sholayar Dam reached 160 feet and the Parambikulam Dam reached 70 feet. Of this, the 120-foot-high Aliyar Dam had reached a height of 118.55 feet as of yesterday. The water supply has been cut off due to rains and power generation at Kadamparai Dam. The discharge of Aliyar Dam increased to 1284 cubic feet per second.

The water level of the dam rose rapidly and reached full capacity. Considering the safety of the dam, public works officials today released 440 cubic feet of surplus water per second through 4 sluices. In addition, 625 cubic feet of water per second has been released through Pollachi Canal, Vettaikaranpudur Canal and river basin. Coastal villages have been warned of the risk of flooding on behalf of public works officials as excess water is being discharged from the dam.
