CCMC has in partnership with a city-based corporate house and non-profit organisation undertaken a sapling plantation initiative in a reserve sites owned by the civic body
Coimbatore: In a bid to improve the green space in the city, the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has in partnership with a city-based corporate house PRICOLand non-profit organisation undertaken a sapling plantation initiative in a reserve sites owned by the civic body. The debut step in this direction was initiated by corporate house Pricol and non-profit organisation Siruthuli. As part of the initiative, as many as 599 saplings were planted in corporation owned reserve sites located at Emerald City park, VKV Kumaraguru Nagar in Saravanampatti.
Spearheading the drive, Raja Gopal Sunkara, Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) Commissioner planted the first sapling. He participated as chief guest. Also in attendance was Ravichandran, CCMCs Town Planning Officer (TPO). According to a source who is familiar with the initiative, a large number of Panai saplings will be planted as part of the drive. Saplings will be planted all along the perimeter of the parcel of land with a layered plantation of various native trees in a Miyawaki pattern that would soon form a mini forest. The upcoming residential area where numerous concrete buildingsare coming up with no green cover around,such small pockets of land with tree cover will soon become the much needed lung space.
Expressing her happiness on the occasion Vanitha Mohan, Managing Trustee of Siruthuli, remarked that she is thankful to the CCMC for permitting to carry out plantation projects in these reserve sites. She added that it was also very heartening to watch small children from the nearby areas actively participate in planting the saplings which they promised to nurture till they grow up into big trees filled with life.
The life givers in such residential units will be a vital space for people to get along and carry out their daily heath regimes to stay fit and live a disease free life. The members of the local community were so happy to see the activity in their neighbourhood and came up with so many ideas that could change the face of the place and can beat down the hot sun to give a more pleasant ambience with the help of these trees.
