Coimbatore: More than 200 jewellery shops in Pollachi have been closed till 11 a.m in protest of the new hallmark laws introduced by the central government.
The Central Government has announced that gold jewellery sold through the Standards Authority of India will now be required to obtain a permanent stamp with the new Hallmark Quality Identification Number.
Protesting against this, jewellery shop owners across the state today closed their jewellery shops from 9 am to 11 am. As part of this, more than 200 jewellery shops have been closed in Pollachi. As a result, areas, including the bustling Big Bazaar street are deserted. They said that they welcome the quality certification system for jewellery but oppose the HUID code mandating the new hallmark permanent seal on all jewellery.
They said this is likely to increase the price of gold jewelry and can bring down sales to half. They said workers could also lose their jobs. The jewellery owners have therefore demanded the Central Government to withdraw this system immediately.
