Farmers overjoyed as Aliyar Dam reaches 119 ft.; Excess water released to nearby water bodies

Overjoyed farmers in Pollachi thank the TN Govt. for diverting excess water from Aliyar Dam to other water bodies nearby.

Coimbatore: With the southwest monsoon intensifying in the Western Ghats near Pollachi, the water supply from the catchment areas of the Parambikulam Aliyar Irrigation Project has increased this year. Following this, the water levels of Sholayar Dam, Parambikulam Dam and Aliyar Dam has increased.

Since the water level of the 120-ft. Aliiyar Dam reached 119 ft on Sunday, farmers demanded that the excess water from the dam be diverted to ponds. Following this, Public Works Department officials decided to inspect and open the surplus water to ponds in Pollachi area.

Hence in compliance to the request of farmers, 200 cubic ft. of water was released to the Pollachi canal and 48 cubic ft. in Vettaikaranpudur Canal to prevent wastage of water. Water was released into Samathur Elavakkarai Lake in Palar Basin and Aliyar Basin, Kuppuchipudur Lake next to Anaimalai, Pappathipallam Pond, 7 dams in Kariyanchettipalayam village, 25 dams in Manjanayakkanur and the dams in Pilchinnampalayam.

Farmers in Pollachi have thanked the Tamil Nadu Government for taking this step since the groundwater level had risen and agriculture was likely to be beneifitted in the future owing to excess water being diverted from Aliyar Dam to other waterbodies nearby.
