Coimbatore: As a preparation towards combating the third wave of 'Covid-19,' the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP), Tamil Nadu State Chapter (TNSC) organised a virtual seminar in which more than 4,000 pediatricians participated.

The Secretary of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Tamil Nadu State Chapter said, "The Indian Academy of Pediatrics with over 28,000 child health doctors in India has various branches and specialty chapters across India. In Tamil Nadu, the IAP–TNSC branch with over 3500 members is doing tremendous work for the health and welfare of children during this Covid-19 pandemic time.
Even as the world has seen two major waves of the Covid-19 pandemic and is preparing for a third wave, children below the age group of 18 years might get affected according to data since they have not been vaccinated yet. As a preparation towards readying for a third wave, the IAP-TNSC has been meticulously involving pediatricians across the State in sensitizing and teaching them regarding various aspects of the disease. Under the able leadership of the President, Dr. Mohammed Ismail, Secretary Dr. K Rajendran, Treasurer Dr. Gopal Subramoniam and Joint Secretary Dr. M Tiroumourougane Serane, the IAP-TNSC conducted a virtual seminar on preparing pediatricians for the third wave of Covid-19."
The program was well-attended by almost 4,000 pediatricians across the State and all over India. The program was presided over by the Chief Guest,Ma.Subramanian, the Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare. In his inaugural address, he emphasized the need for preparing for the Covid-19 third wave and the Government’s commitment toward the same. He also highlighted the need for vaccinating children as early as possible.
The Guest of Honour, R Poornalingam, Former Health Secretary in the Government of Tamilnadu and Chairman, State Task Force for Covid-19 management congratulated the team members for their commitment. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. J Radha Krishnan, Principal Secretary, Government Health and Family Welfare Department, Tamilnadu. He emphasized the need for hand sanitising, face masks and social distancing as part of primary prevention and applauded the role of IAP in Public Health Awareness and training the nursing and paramedical staff.
Dr. Kolandasamy, former District Head of Public Health, Dr. Narayana Babu, Director of Medical Education, Dr. Gurunathan, Director Medical with Rural Health Services, Dr. T. Selvavinayagam, Director of Public Health and Dr. S. Srinivasan, State Nodal Officer, NRHM, Tamilnadu graced the event. The convenor of this session was Dr. S Balasubramoniam from KKCTH, Chennai and eminent specialist speakers from various parts of India and abroad were roped in for the training sessions. Dr. Winsely Rose, Professor of Pediatrics from CMC Vellore spoke on what is known and unknown about the immunology of Covid. Dr. Tanu Singal from Mumbai spoke on Management of Pediatric Covid.
Dr. K Rajendran detailed the program highlighting that "Dr. Dhiren Gupta from Gangaram Hospital, Delhi spoke on PICU Management of sick Covid children. A discussion on Covid vaccination was chaired by Dr. Jagdish Chinnappa from Bangalore. Experts in this field, Professor Jacob John, Dr. Sanjay Srirampur and Dr. Sanjay Lalwani elaborately discussed the topic and cleared doubts as well. The management of MIS-C was discussed in detail by Dr. A V Ramanan from Bristol, UK and by Dr. S Balasubramonian, Chennai in a crisp and algorithmic way. The speakers cleared all the doubts for the participants on the subject."
