In commemoration of the annual World Elephant Day, awareness programs were held for tribal people and tourists in Tirupur Forest Reserve.
Coimbatore: World Elephant Day is an international annual event on August 12, dedicated to the preservation and protection of the world's elephants. World Elephant Day was celebrated at the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve, with the event thronged by tribals and tourists. Awareness programs were conducted on Friday in various forest reserves such as Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Tirupur to make people realize the importance of protecting elephants for forests to thrive.
District Assistant Forest Ranger Ganeshram explained about the role that elephants play in the realm of forest resources, the suffering and death of elephants due to human negligence, their migration into urban and agricultural lands due to encroachment, elephant migration routes and the loss of lives due to human-elephant conflict. India has the second highest elephant population in the world and in particular, Nilgiris biosphere reserve is renowned for being home to the largest remaining population of wild Asian elephants.
