Covid-19 patients' medical waste dumped in Udumalai Government Arts College yet to be cleared; Professors complain of stench

Professors complain of stench from Covid-19 patients' medical waste dumped in Udumalai Government Arts College which has not been cleared.

Coimbatore: Professors at Udumalai Government Arts College which comprised 2000 students have been complaining of stench owing to medical waste that was dumped on the college campus during the Covid-19 pandemic. The college management had declared a holiday and converted the campus into a specialized hospital last year when Covid-19 infections had increased. The college campus again functioned as a hospital during the second wave of Covid-19.

Hundreds of patients were treated at the college campus and the last of the patients left the college premises in the last few days. The medical waste of these patients, the clothes they used and food parcel waste have been dumped as a huge pile in the college campus.

Currently, the Government has asked all professors to teach students online from the college campus. But the risk of catching an infection from the medical waste scattered throughout the campus is high. The Udumalai municipality has repeatedly complained that the waste has not been disposed and hence the Government is expected to step in and help dispose of the medical waste in the college campus.
