"AIADMK woman leader who made a fuss at DMK's Gram Sabha meeting is not from a downtrodden community:" DMK petitions IG
Coimbatore: In a much publicized incident in Devarayapuram in Thondamuthur in January this year, an AIADMK Women’s Wing President, Poongudi allegedly asked the then DMK leader, M K Stalin as to why is he conducting a Gram Sabha meeting in Coimbatore if he did not know the area well. When Stalin responded by asking her who she was, the woman responded saying she was an Indian citizen.
When the woman revealed her hometown, the DMK Chief had reportedly told the crowd that the AIADMK Minister and Thondamuthur MLA, S P Velumani had sent her. The woman reportedly created a stir and had to be escorted from the spot by a few DMK cadres and the police. Later, the woman filed a case against four cadres of the DMK for allegedly harassing her in the name of caste.
In a petition to West Zone IG Sudhakar, a DMK cadre stated, "My name is C M Rajendran. I am a member of the DMK Central Film Censorship Board and the organizer of the Coimbatore North District DMK Weavers Wing. On 2.1.2021, I participated in the meeting by DMK leader M K Stalin. In the Grama Sabha Meeting, Party President M K Stalin was taking questions one by one. Then, suddenly a woman got up and acted in a way that caused a commotion in the crowd.
Immediately, Party President Stalin ordered the woman to be sent away and we escorted her out safely. Since the AIADMK was ruling then, S P Velumani instigated the woman, Poongodi who then lodged a complaint at the Thondamuthur police station, alleging that she was insulted by four DMK members, including Sellappan, Rangasamy and Perumal Raja and myself.
Also, the woman, Poongodi, who belonged to the AIADMK, had complained that she belonged to an oppressed community and that she was abused based on her caste. Later, a case was registered against us under the PCR Act. We have been facing the case since then and when facing interrogation at the VAO office it was found that the woman had converted from Hinduism to Christianity and it is certain that she does not belong to the downtrodden community. Hence, the case does not fall under the PCR. This confirms that the case filed was a false case and we have been suffering depression and disturbances for the last 8 months," he added.
"We, therefore, request that the case against us be withdrawn. We also demand that legal action be taken against four persons, including Poongodi, Maheshwari and Mini of the AIADMK, who falsely prosecuted four of us belonging to the DMK and for concealing their conversion certificates," petitioned C M Rajendran.
