Coimbatore Press Club condemns attack on the headquarters of Satyam TV in Chennai

Coimbatore: A man entered the Sathiyam TV head office in Royapuram Kalmandapam area of Chennai on Tuesday evening with a knife and threatened to kill the staff there.

He then hit and damaged the glass desk, TV and other items in the office living room. Some of the employees also appear to have been assaulted. The person has threatened employees with inappropriate words stating a number of common issues. The police arrived on time and prevented any major incidents. The investigation revealed that he was Rajesh Kumar from Uppilipalayam, Coimbatore and that the Rayapuram police had made an arrest. The police should investigate and publicly state the identity of the person who broke into the news television office and carried out the attack.

They have also urged not to mellow down the situation stating that the person concerned is likely to be mentally ill. The Coimbatore Press Club urges the Tamil Nadu government to take appropriate action against the person and prevent such incidents from happening again. They said that person attacked the head office of a news television company, mentioning various things, intimidating the employees and raising various suspicions of the attack.

This can be seen not only as an attack on a news organization, but also as a threat to media personnel as a whole. The Coimbatore Press Council therefore expects a transparent inquiry into the matter and impartial action. The Press conference also urged the Government of Tamil Nadu to expedite the enactment of the long-pending Journalists Protection Act without delay. The Government of Tamil Nadu should note that only legal protection will protect journalists and media outlets in the future.
