Aliyar Dam water level reaches 110 feet; First phase flood warning sounded for coastal villages.

Coimbatore: Pollachi, Valparai and surrounding areas of Coimbatore district have been experiencing heavy southwest monsoon for the last few days. Due to this, the water level of the 160 feet capacity Sholayar Dam, which is the main component of the Parambikulam Aliyar Irrigation Project has already reached full capacity.

The water level of the Parambikulam dam increased due to heavy rains that have been pouring in the catchment areas for the last two days. As a result, the water level of the 120-feet deep Aliyar Dam has reached 110 feet for the first time this year. The dam is receiving 859 cubic feet of water per second. It is expected to reach full capacity in a few days due to continuous rains.

The Public Works Department has issued a first stage flood warning to the people of the area including Ambarambalayam and Anaimalai along the river. Farmers are overjoyed that the Aliyar Dam which is the source of drinking water for the people of Coimbatore district through the Ambarampalayam Kurichi, Kuniyamuthur joint drinking water project and also the source of the old and new strategic irrigation in the Pollachi and Anaimalai areas will now be overflowing and hence there will be no shortage of drinking water and water for irrigation, this year.
