Police said the Thandu Mariamman temple is located in the Uppilipalayam area of the Collector's Office which is in the main part of Coimbatore. It is controlled by the Department of Hindu Religious Affairs, the temple has been open for a month since the coronavirus lockdown was lifted.
Also, since it is currently the month of Aadi, a large number of devotees visit the Thandu Mariamman Temple. That too, especially yesterday, being 'Aadi' Friday many devotees came to offer prayers. The temple priest locked the temple and left after completing the pujas as usual last night. The temple staff at the temple had also finished their work and left. Later, when the priest came to the temple this morning, he was shocked to see that the hundial by the devotees in the temple had been broken. Since the unidentified persons could not completely break the hundial, no money was looted. Priest immediately informed the authorities of the Hindu Temple Department. A complaint was lodged with the Race Course Police.
Race Course police went to the scene and investigated the complaint. Preliminary investigations have revealed that unidentified persons may have jumped through the compound wall at the back of the temple and entered and were involved in the robbery.
