Coimbatore: Due to coronavirus lockdown for the last two years, many restrictions have been imposed on the celebration of Ganesha Chaturthi.

It is customary to place decorated Ganesha idols in the streets in front of Ganesha Chaturthi and perform pujas, yajnas for a week and then take them in procession and dissolve them in ponds. It is customary for Hindus to celebrate this lavishly and for the past two years they have not been able to celebrate well due to the coronavirus.

The Vinayagar Chaturthi festival is to be celebrated on September 10. Following this the artisans have started the work of designing Ganesha statues. They said they lost money last time due to insufficient sales and did not know how it would turn out this time. The Ganesha Chaturthi festival is scheduled to be celebrated on September 10.

Following this, statues are being made and painted in the Selvapuram area of Coimbatore. Visarjan is performed after worshiping Ganesha idols at home in honor of Ganesha Chaturthi. Craftsmen are reluctant to make huge idols this year as Hindu organizations usually dedicate large idols to worship. And during the first wave of the Coronavirus artisans sold the statues they had made the previous year.

With only small statues in stock this year, the work of making large statues has not yet begun and the artisans are engaged in the task of making only the statues in hand. Ganesha statue making artisan in Kallamedu area says Ganesha idols cannot be stocked in large quantities. They said they were reluctant to get involved in the making of the big statue. Hindu organizations are planning to celebrate Ganesha Chaturthi well this year so that people can recover from the Coronavirus impact.
