Three youth arrested for smuggling banned gutka from a godown in Somanur in Coimbatore


Coimbatore: In Coimbatore, the City Commissioner and the District Superintendent of Police have consistently issued arrest warrants and sealed off shops for selling gutka products which are banned by the Tamil Nadu government. Special forces are formed and engaged in special raids. This is followed by investigation of smuggling and selling of tobacco products. Police stopped three teenagers on a two-wheeler and discovered that they were smuggling tobacco.

Following a thorough interrogation, 550 kg of tobacco was confiscated from the godown they were using.Following a tip-off that gutka and pan masala products which were banned from being sold by the Tamil Nadu government in Coimbatore, the policehave been conducting an intensive search operation led by Karumathampatti Deputy Superintendent of Police, Anand Arokiyaraj on the orders of District Superintendent of Police, S Selvanagarathinam.

Police officials led by Sub-Inspector Alagesan of Karumathampatti police conducted a vehicle search near the cemetery near Somanur. They stopped a North Indian teenager who was on a two-wheeler with two bags and interrogated him. It was then revealed that he was carrying gutka packets for sale. He was identified as Jitendra Kumar (24) of Rajasthan who had brought the illegal items from a godown in the same area.

Following this, the police rushed to the godown. They confiscated 550 kg of gutka and tobacco products which were stored there. It was revealed that the godown belonged to the owner of Maha Shiv Shakti General Stores in Somanur and that its owner Motilal had been arrested and jailed for hoarding gutka products last week. Police have now also arrested Uttam Kumar (21), Prem Singh (20) and Jitendra Kumar (24) who were working in the godown.
