Relatives of man killed by bear besiege forest officers and protest demanding that people in Valparai be protected from wildlife

Coimbatore: The Valparai Anaimalai Tiger Reserve in Coimbatore district is home to a large number of wildlife such as tigers, leopards and elephants.

Due to this, human-wildlife conflicts have become commonplace in the Valparai region. Mohanraj, a tea plantation worker in Villoni LD area was killed by a bear near his house on Tuesday night. His body is being kept at Valparai Government Hospital for autopsy.

Mohanraj's relatives besieged Assistant Forest Ranger Prasanth and Assistant Forest Ranger Selvam at the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve Headquarters when they arrived at the Valparai Government Hospital on Wednesday, and demanded that people be protected from straying wildlife. They also urged that the wife of the deceased be granted education funds for the children and for Government employment.

Following this, Valparai City DMK Attorney General Palpandi, AIADMK City Secretary Mayil Ganesan, City Co-operative Bank Chairman Valparai V Hameed and Forest Department officials informed the Government of the requests of the kin and assured them that appropriate action would be taken. Following this, the protest that caused a stir in the area was withdrawn.
