Coimbatore: With the second wave of the coronavirus diminishing, the larvae of mosquitoes have been collected and sent to Coimbatore to study the Zika virus attack.

Due to many cases of Zika virus in Kerala, the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation and the District Administration of the Health Department are working together for complete prevention. In an attempt to do so, worms called mosquito larvae that can cause the virus have been collected and sent for analysis. Samples of mosquitoes have been collected and sent for analysis at 10 places in Coimbatore due to the increasing incidence of Zika virus in Kerala.

More than 25 people have been infected with the Zika virus in various parts of Kerala. Following this, preventive measures are being taken to prevent the spread of Zika virus in Tamil Nadu. Surveillance has been intensified at 13 check posts in the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border areas including Walayar, Anaikatti, Velanthavalam and Meenatchipuram.

The Zika virus is caused by the Aedes mosquito, which spreads dengue and chickenpox. Following this, mosquito larvae have been collected from 10 places including Pollachi, Anaimalai, Walayar, Meenatchipuram and Gopalapuram in the Kerala border areas of Coimbatore district. These have been sent to the laboratory in Chennai for analysis.

Health officials said, "Samples of mosquito larvae have been collected from areas and residential areas for research into the Zika virus. A total of 25 larvae were collected at each of the 10 sites. It is used for inspection after the larvae have grown, as it is difficult to catch and inspect mosquitoes. Furthermore, according to the results of the study already sent, no mosquitoes were found to be infected with the Zika virus in Coimbatore district. Currently, samples of larvae have been collected and sent to a laboratory in Chennai to diagnose dengue. The results of the study will be available within a week and the next steps will be planned accordingly."
