Canal rejuvenation was not properly implemented during AIADMK regime - MP Saminathan

Coimbatore: Minister MP Saminathan has alleged that the rehabilitation work of the Contour canal was not fully completed during the last AIADMK regime.

Coimbatore: Minister MP Saminathan has accused the last AIADMK government of not properly completing the canal repair work.

3.77 lakh acres of land is being irrigated by the Thirumurthy Dam under the Parambikulam-Azhiyaru Irrigation Project. The Contour Canal is the main canal that carries water from the Parambikulam Dam to the Thirumurthy Dam. Water from the Parambikulam Dam is generated at the Sarkarpathy Power Station and then carried to the Thirumurthy Dam at a rate of up to 1,000 cubic feet per second via the Contour Canal, 49 km away.

Occasional blockages in the canal due to rain and landslides keep happening. As water from the Thirumurthy Dam was soon to be opened for fourth zone irrigation, the farmers demanded that the Contour canal be dredged.

Subsequently, on behalf of the Public Works Department, the canal dredging work has been going on since last month.

In this context, the Minister of Information and Public Relations, MP Saminathan, personally visited and inspected the work. During the inspection, Thirumurthy Reservoir Project Committee Chairman Medical Paramasivam, DMK Coimbatore South District Officer Dr. Varadarajan, DMK officials and many other public works officials were present.

Speaking to reporters after the inspection, Minister MB Saminathan said, 'The Thirumurthy dam is in a situation where it is not possible to carry water completely as the Contour canal is blocked by falling rocks, trees and plants during the rainy season. During the last AIADMK regime, the rehabilitation work of the Contour Canal was not fully completed.

The canal rehabilitation work will be completed within a week and steps will be taken to bring uninterrupted water to the Thirumurthy Dam Fourth Zone Irrigation.
