Surveillance cameras of the forest department have revealed that the number of wildlife including elephants, tigers, leopards, wildebeests and squirrels has increased significantly in the Coimbatore region.



Coimbatore: Surveillance cameras of the forest department have revealed that the number of wildlife including elephants, tigers, and leopards has increased significantly in the Coimbatore region.

The Coimbatore Regional Forest covers an area of 70,000 hectares comprising of 8 forest reserves in the Coimbatore district. Of these, the Poluvampatti, Madukkarai, Karamadai, Mettupalayam and Periyanayakanpalayam forests are adjacent to the Kerala forest, while the Sirumugai and Mettupalayam forests are adjacent to the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve in Erode district.

These wildlife sanctuaries are home to a large number of animals including elephant, tiger, leopard, bear and deer. To protect this, anti-poaching guards and forest rangers are patrolling day and night to prevent forest crimes. Due to this, the number of wildlife has increased recently. Surveillance cameras installed by the forest department have revealed that the number of elephants, tigers, leopards in the wild has increased significantly, especially in the Mettupalayam, Sirumugai and other wildlife sanctuaries. The forest department said the number of wildlife has increased significantly due to intensive patrolling and good climate conditions within the forest.
