Coimbatore: Friday turned out to be a special day at the Coimbatore International Airport since 11 flights were operated after a long break owing to Covid-19 lockdown in the district.

Coimbatore International Airport serves the aviation needs of people from 7 surrounding districts. Post 'Covid-19' second wave outbreak, flight operations were badly hit. Some airlines had temporarily suspended their services. Before pandemic outbreak, more than 30 flights would be operated each day at the Coimbatore airport which included both domestic and international services on a regular basis. After the pandemic outbreak, the daily flight operations had literally reduced to five flights per day. But even as passenger movement increased, daily flight operations continued to increase.

After a long break, July16 kick-started Air Arabia flights from Sharjah in the wee hours of the morning at 3:50 am and the last flight for the day departed to Delhi at 9:30 pm tonight. Out of the 11 flights, Air Arabia operated 1 flight, Air India 2 flights and Indigo 8 flights. The routes operated were Sharjah, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The increase in the flight operations has encouraged aviation enthusiasts who believe that normalcy will soon be witnessed at the Coimbatore airport.
