Zika virus prevention in Coimbatore: 12 flying squads set up to monitor 228 panchayats

Coimbatore: Precautionary measures are being taken in rural areas to prevent the spread of Zika virus, which is spreading fast in Kerala, in Coimbatore district.

The Zika virus has been spreading in the state of Kerala for the past few days. The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes to humans when they are bitten by mosquitoes. The virus is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes.

As part of this, 12 flying squads have been set up to monitor 228 panchayats, a district administration official said. Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border areas are being closely monitored to control the spread of the disease. In particular, 13 check posts along the Kerala border in Coimbatore district are being closely monitored.

Serious measures are being taken to prevent mosquito-borne diseases in the rural areas of Coimbatore district. As part of this, 12 flying squads have been set up to monitor 228 panchayats in rural areas as a precautionary measure against the Zika virus.

A district administration official, "There are 12 unions in Coimbatore district namely Karamadai, Madukkarai, PNPalayam, SS Kulam, Thondamuthur, Anaimalai, Kinathukadavu, Pollachi North, Pollachi South, Annur, Sulur and Sultanpet. It has 228 panchayats. 12 flying squads has been set up to monitor these panchayats. This will include an officer in the rank of Deputy Tahsildar, health department staff and rural divisional officers. These flying squads go to the panchayats in the unions and monitor the mosquito eradication work. As Aedes mosquitoes are more in waterlogged areas awareness is being raised to prevent production."
