Coimbatore: Kozhikadai Ganesan petitions Labour Minister regarding plantation workers' pay hike and labour tax cancellation.

There are about 50,000 tea plantation workers in Valparai, Coimbatore district. The last 2016 contract expires on 30.6.21, with a pay negotiation every 4 years. Thus the plantation management and the trade union leaders of the workers come together to negotiate.

A one-day wage should be increased to Rs. 500 and an increase of Rs. 200 should be added due to inflation and a total of Rs. 700 should be given as minimum wage. There is a risk of coronavirus infection as tea plantation workers pay their monthly salaries at bank ATMs. Thus, the workers should be handed over their salaries.

Valparai union ex-city council chairman Kozhikkadai Ganesan, city councillor Palpandi district union in-charge Dr Varadharaj made the request to explain to them that the business tax is levied twice a year by the municipality.
