In Tamil Nadu, many thousands of workers are employed in tea and coffee plantations in Coimbatore, Valparai, Nilgiris, Theni, Salem, Tirunelveli and Manjolai.
Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Plantation Workers' Union President Arumugam issued a press release in which he demanded that a salary of Rs. 18,000 per month be fixed for tea and coffee plantation workers in Tamil Nadu.
In Tamil Nadu, many thousands of workers are employed in tea and coffee plantations in Coimbatore, Valparai, Nilgiris, Theni, Salem, Tirunelveli and Manjolai. "Workers in the industry have been working on mountain trails during heavy rains and under the hot sun. Their lives are also at risk due to the danger posed by deadly beasts, leeches and venomous snakes.
The lives of these workers amidst life-threatening conditions are disappointing. The driveway, built 100 years ago, does not have proper sanitation facilities and no camping facility. Safe work-wear is not provided and their daily wage is only Rs.340, with a compulsory stipulated 10 hours a day.
1. The Seventh Central Pay Commission has come into effect from 01.01.2016. As per the recommendation of this Committee,the Central Government Minimum Wage is Rs.18,000 per month.
2. The price index ratio which will be 7.61 percentage in October 2020 is the highest price index recorded since May 2014.
3. Government accounts show that food prices have risen by 11.01 percent in the last two years, 22.21 percent in eggs, 21.81 percent in meat, 18.7 percent in fish and 18.37 percent in lentils.
4. The recommendation of the 15th Labour Commission of India and the judgment of the Supreme Court in the case of Reptakas vs. Fred are taken as the basis for determining the minimum wage of the workers.
5. This recommendation has been confirmed by the 44th Labour Commission of India, which met in 2012. Based on this, the size of the worker's family is 3 consumer units (2 adults + 2 children).
6. According to Dr. Ackroyd's recommendation, everyone needs food to provide 2700 calories per day to survive.
7. Everyone in the family needs 72 yards (approximately 66 meters) of clothing per year.
8. The government's plan to build houses for workers should include rent for houses with a minimum floor area. The low income home has an area of 400 square feet.
9. Salary was thus calculated with 20 percent of the amount of fuel and unforeseen expenses had to be added.
10. An additional 25 percent should be added to the above salary for children's education, medical expenses, festive expenses, old age care, marriage expenses, etc.
The wages of plantation workers should be determined on the basis of the above. Therefore, I request the Minister to call on the concerned plantation principals' organization and trade unions to take action to fix the salary of plantation workers on the basis of 692.80 per day."
